As technology advances, so does e-waste, now one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally. But behind every discarded gadget lies a toxic threat to human health and the environment.

🔍 Hidden Dangers in E-Waste:

• Lead (circuit boards, monitors) : Damages the nervous system, kidneys & brain development in children.

• Cadmium (chip resistors) : Accumulates in organs, causes neural damage & irreversible toxicity

• Mercury (switches, circuit boards) : Leads to chronic brain damage & respiratory disorders.

• Plastics & PVC (cables, housing) : Releases dioxins that disrupt reproductive & developmental health.

This is to inform all Producers, Importers, and Brand Owners (PIBOs) registered during FY 2022-24 that they are required to file their Annual Return (AR) for FY 2023-24 by 30th November 2024. Failure to comply will result in auto-filing of the AR, and EPR obligations for FY 2024-25 will be increased by 25%.

Additionally, registration for manufacturers, sellers, and importers of plastic raw materials in the micro and small category is now operational on the EPR Plastic Portal from December 4, 2024. Entities must submit their applications promptly, referring to the updated guidance manual available on the portal.

In the bustling alleys of Seelampur, Delhi, 11-year-old Salman scours heaps of discarded electronics daily, extracting precious metals like gold and copper. His story is a reflection of countless lives in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) where informal e-waste recycling dominates.

Globally, only 22.3% of e-waste is recycled formally, leaving LMICs with the dual burden of environmental degradation and health hazards. Informal recycling methods release toxins like lead and mercury, threatening communities and ecosystems. I believes formalizing e-waste management is essential for safety, sustainability, and resource recovery. The informal sector’s invaluable efforts must be supported by proper infrastructure, regulation, and global cooperation to turn challenges into opportunities.

While working in waste industry, I've seen it all—discarded phones, obsolete laptops, and countless gadgets replaced by slimmer, faster models. Every year, the world produces 59 million tons of e-waste, a number set to reach 74 million tons by 2030. That’s not just waste; it’s a lost opportunity.

Change starts with us. Let’s rethink, recycle, and rebuild a sustainable future. 🌍♻️ Inside this trash lies $57 billion in precious metals like gold and platinum, but only 17.4% is properly recycled. Worse, the rest leaks toxins into our soil and water, poisoning communities worldwide.

The informal recycling sector struggles to keep up, risking lives to extract metals. I am committed to this change—building a future where every device recycled means a cleaner, safer planet. 🌍♻️

For me, the Global E-Waste Monitor 2024 is a wake-up call. Imagine 62 million tonnes of e-waste generated globally in 2022, enough to circle the Earth with trucks filled with discarded electronics. Yet, only 22.3% was recycled, leaving $91 billion worth of precious materials wasted.

For me, this isn’t just data—it’s a mission. With e-waste set to rise to 82 million tonnes by 2030, we’re committed to driving sustainable solutions. Recycling isn’t just an obligation; it’s the bridge to a cleaner, greener future. 🌍♻️
